If its not Jack Ward the way I view it is it will take 3 years at least for the new man to learn the ropes. Can we really afford to be at a standstill for 3 years? Hereford times are better than they've ever been. Especially the bull interest and market with the commercial cowmen. Not saying there aren't any other very deserving candidates, but it's a no brainer if you really think about it. Like him, love him, dislike him, or hate him I honestly feel its what's best for the breed. Sometimes you have to overlook a personal feeling for the bigger picture. With all that bein said we've always thought very highly of Jack and the job he's done!

Glen: In your 11 Feb post you write: "I really think he & Ward stood tall when some people wanted to hide the IE deal."
IT IS OBVIOUS YOU ARE NOT IN POSESSION OF THE FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"I AM RIGHT..................................AND I'M DAM SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Art Madsen, I am not sure why your venom. Evidently you were burned pretty hard with the IE, deal and hold a grudge against the Holden's. I let your rants go because I don't know all the facts about Jack Holden's actions or Mark Coopers, either. I have tried to generally give them the benefit of the doubt. The only "damning" thing I have HEARD is Jack wanted to be sure it "was what it was" before he started making adjustments. And I have been told by SEVERAL sources that Jack did everything he could to help the folks affected out. And that has been relayed to me by at least THREE different breeders.
As far as my comment about Ward and Huffines on the IE deal, I have been told by TWO people who would be considered "insiders" that a certain person (NOT JACK HOLDEN OR MARK COOPER) made the comment "we'll have to sweep it under the rug" to which Huffines/Ward replied "We're not going to do that!"

And just to be clear, I put "damning" in parenthesis because I don't think it is "damning". I'd want to make 100% sure we knew what we were dealing with and what caused it and the source of it before taking any actions.

The AHA (that represents the Hereford industry and the Hereford breed itself ...) must have as the day-to-day executive, an individual who is dedicated to Herefords period. By dedicated, I mean an individual who grew up with Herefords, raises (seed stock or commercial)/sells/shows Herefords now and will continue to raise (seed stock or commercial)/sell/show Herefords well into the future. Further, the new EVP must continue the growth of our CHB products by looking at health/nutrition aspects (as well as its tastefulness, juiciness and tenderness ...) of Hereford beef and develop a dynamic and broad based advertising program to promote it. The AHA executive must NOT be an individual who has exhibited, and still exhibits, a demonstrated affinity and dedication to another breed of beef cattle (i.e. the black critters).

Whoever gets it really needs to start promoting the breed. Really need to work on the perception of the breed and also the value of the breed.
Last thing on this. I just hope who gets it isn't and arrogant ass. Tired of that with the association and people in general.

Looks like the forces are aligning against Jack Ward and his history with the Angus breed. I really don't have a strong opinion regarding Jack Ward, other than if he doesn't get the job, I suspect there will also be a search for his replacement soon. I do have a comment regarding cmf's post about it taking 3 years for someonefrom the outside to learn the ropes and the AHA standing still. Apparently, cmf, you must know a lot of slow learners. There is a support staff in place at the AHA and an astute executive will know how to utilize that staff to his/her advantage while learning the subtle intracacies of the job and implementing his/her vision of the future and direction. And the association will not "stand still". It will either move forward or backward - and I'd bet there will be disagreement about which direction the AHA is going regardless of who gets the job.

I really hope this isn't true because anyone who has ever spent time with Jack would know he's as big of a promoter of the Hereford breed as anyone currently employed by AHA. His Angus background shouldn't bother people, he's been working for us not the Angus. If they go outside of someone currently with AHA you can bet the chances of that person being someone already established in the Hereford breed is not going to be very likely. If you want to sit down and talk about Hereford cattle Jack is a guy that can probably go into great detail about almost any bloodline or aspect you want to talk about. He's been sitting at the auction block on our state sale for the past several introducing each animal as they come into the ring by going through their pedigrees and highlighting bloodlines that animal has in it's pedigree talking about how such and such is know for certain traits and who in breed has been using them with success. On top of that he's just an all-around great guy who isn't afraid to be available to do what he can for you. I mentioned back when the new EPD's came out that I wondered what happened to the performance pedigree link that was missing after the update, I emailed Jack at 8pm at night inquiring about that and assumed I probably wouldn't hear back sometime until the next day at the earliest and he had already emailed me back just a little over an hour later with a response and that impressed me that he took the time to do that when he probably had other things going on.
Some bitch and moan here about what is being done within our breed to promote and improve it but how many of you have ever taken the time to reach out to your field staff or someone like Jack at AHA and voice your concerns, ask questions, or just talk to one of them when you see them at a sale? I think you'd be surprised at just how much time and effort these guys put into promoting this breed and just how accessible most of them probably are if you ever wanted to get their thoughts or run something by them.

George hit the 3 year comment right on. In this day and time of this point in history, every association or organization wants to " WIN " now. If it takes someone to " learn the ropes " for any period of time after they are hired then they were the wrong hire to start with. With that, any committee or group appointed to nominate or select a replacement on the premise he or she may need three (3) years to get up and running needs to be relieved of their duties and a new commitee appointed.

In addition, who says only a man can be the Ex-VP. Terri Barber, as one example, fits most if not all the criteria, many of you have suggested any new hire have on their resume.

About a year ago I questioned with all the emphasis that is put on the Juniors, why the AHA never fills any of its open Jr./Youth/Show positions with former NJHA members. They seem to hire folks with Shorthorn or other breed experiences for those jobs. Several of you on here said that hiring a former NJHA member for those jobs might create a conflict of interest. I would think your qualifications for EVP above might create an even worse situation. There are some in the Angus association that think that is part of their internal problems of the past few months. I have no problems with your other qualifications.

If a feller can't get up to speed in a couple of months he had no business being hired for the position and that goes for any position in any career.

So you guys honestly think in less than 3 years an outsider can be up to Craig's level of knowledge? I don't care how much advice/technology/etc is involved nothing takes the place of being thrown in the pit and learning first hand

If we have to wait 3 years, we might as well kiss it goodbye. I doubt if the AQHA hired Craig with the attitude that it will take him 3 years to get up to speed.

I'm sure it's not going to take 3 years to get up to speed but to become completely comfortable and know it like the back of your hand will take time. I maybe overboard in saying this about the 3 yrs but I guess my logic behind that is I think Jack would fulfill the role much quicker with overall knowledge than any other person I can think of

Also if he doesn't get the job and decided to leave that's 2 major positions needing filled compared to 1. Double Trouble

this is all kinda from the CSU thread and evp thread together. read this article: linki got to listen to this guy talk to a group of kids i was in class with while at MSU. our class toured the american simmental association and he stopped in to visit. anyhow all i can really remember was about him talking of his work on cab and that basically he did what everyone in the world told him was impossible. seems like there are all kinds of parrallels today for what the hereford breed is sitting on that are so similair to what sparked the very first ideas for cab. cab came about because some guy wanted to get paid for what he believed was angus cattle's strength and fate did the rest. i think that's the story with the CSU deal... just haven't found the person that didn't know it was impossible yet. but someone recognized this guy for what he was not his resume... and when that potential person is sought after by the aha i hope they give the sob 2 or 3 picks of the damn heifers and not loose him.

Also if he doesn't get the job and decided to leave that's 2 major positions needing filled compared to 1. Double Trouble If that were to happen which I do not, I do not forsee double trouble but rather enhanced oppurtunities to fill 2 positions with potential game changers for the Hereford breed and AHA members if any full scale changes will ever occur with both policies and direction of the breed. I agree with Bookcliff that there are many capable individuals who possess the skills and experience to fill the current vacancy across the Industry.
