Recovering from knee replacement so playing on Hereford talk. Does anyone know if their is anyone still raising the old Clayton Numode cattle that Mr. Burris bred in New Mexico? Hope you recover fast from your knee replacement. I believe you are talking about Glenn Burrows. He passed away in 2001 I believe. I was just thinking about him again when I found your post this morning. His father was a good family friend and had one of the best horned Herefords herds in the area. Glenn turned them polled when he took over if memory serves me correctly. I've done some searches and haven't found anybody raising any. Did see one animal with it several generations back a while back. Wish I knew more. If you hear anything please post it.

The one I was familiar with were polled. Those would have been in the late 70s to early 80s. If I find anything I'll post it.

Did go back in time and find where Neil Trask bought Clayton Numode B 556. Can't find anything more recent and these go back to the 80's.

When he came back and took over the ranch he changed them over. He called them the Clayton Numodes. He did participate in the feed trials in this area. He had some that did well.

I saw some progeny, thought that it was an English bull but don't remember anything else.

Some of Glenn's cattle went back to the RWJ Vic cattle. He used some bulls from there.

I see frank sparks on the list. His Tom is there and sells privately. Great People and outstanding cattle. The first bull I bought from them had the least cows culled of problems of any bull I ever owned.frank did a contouring in his pasture with a home made lister that left a furrow to hold water. It was survey so no water ran off. I have a pasture of it and can run at least twice the cows if not three times. As frank said it sure cuts back on the antelope hunters chasing across your ranch.

I was at the sale when ankony dispersed the cooper cattle. As i remember they had bought several years of Jacks older cows for a nice price. I was good friends with both jack and les. I was in the air force stationed at great Falls and visited both ranches often especially les. First time I road out there on a kawasaki 100 dirt bick. I know les was not happy when jack let those cows go. I was setting by Jack at the dispersal and Alex madona behind us. He kept asking jack if the lot was worth it. Jack was gettin uncomfortable I could tell. Louis Johnson was there as I remember leaving a pen and held the gait for him and he thanked me. He later bought a cow for 20k.I think jack bought her son and used him several years. I am thinking the year was 74 .I bought a son from jack and he was born in 76. Best uddered cows we had ever had. I was sitting with Jack at the Stan Lund dispersal when sand Carlson paid 5000 for that heifer calf. I was not married and jack turns to me and says there you go ed go meet her. He was a special freind. Does anyone know about the Albert Mitchell ranch? We saw some beauties there in 68 but they would not sell just one head. We later ended up on Bob meeks ranch and did get bulls from him later on. I guess that ranch is now a corn farm thanks to his nephew.

Hi everyone! I've only skimmed through the thread so the answer might be in here somewhere, but I'll take a chance on asking anyway; I remember Onondaga Herefords from the 90's and early '00, and I've obviously googled, but can only find mentions of bulls from years back. Is this herd still active? What about the herd which had Tannis as prefix. I think there were bulls named Tannis Expo and Tannis Dakota. Am I right? Is this herd still in business?

Does anyone know anything about D Bar Herefords in Texas? Dan Gramen was his name. He was in business from the mid 90's to 2005 I think. He was a business man from San Antonio and made aircraft parts I think. His wife inherited a ranch from a relative and they tried L1 Herefords. He bought a lot of good cows from Miles City and Coopers. He got a lot of advice from Mark Cooper. I knew Dan some he offered me a job in 1999 and someimes wished I taken it but since he dispersed in 2005 God must have been looking out for me because I took a job with a commercial operation instead. Coppers and Holdens both bought some cows in the dispersion. They still have some influence in a few of their donors. Anybody got any info?2

I was going thru some old Hereford journals that my grandpa had kept from back in the 70s-80s (I believe) and its interesting to see some names I recognize as still being large breeders that are still going today and other places that have disappeared in the last 15 years or so that I can remember.
As a younger breeder, some breeders that I remember selling out are Lone Star, DeShazer, Star Lake, and JWR.
My grandpa still tells stories and shows us pictures from when he worked at Northern Pump farms.

Got some sad news today. Jack Cheves passed away this morning. Jack was a super nice guy and one of the "Good Ones". He was Herdsman at Bridwells in their hay day and later Assistant Manager at Oxleys in Oklahoma. Retired in Pawhuska.

Don't think the cattle went on after T.R. Some people named Meyers had bought quite a few of them but I think they are gone too.
How about Francis Hill. Do you remember him? Honey Creek Ranch and later Brookwood Cattle Co. around Ada Oklahoma Got word last week that Suzie Watson Langford died. Reminds me of Watson Ranch and Slim Taylor. A neighbor of their's was Jimmy Foster. He was a fullblood Cherokee I think . Called the ranch Arrowhead Farms. Frank Taggart worked for him. Lots of tales about Frank. He was said to be in on the "borrowing' of The Grand Champion Duck at Denver. Said they took him on to Ft. Worth and entered him in the Poultry show under the name "Zato Quack". Tom Harris and Paul Stidam had alot of stories about both Frank and Francis.

was looking through an older (not too old) AHJ and was curious as to when some of these herds "went out"? I'm sure some of our grizzled vets might know. And some may still be around and I am just unaware. No particular order and any stories or recollections would be interesting (to me at least) Bright Bros Lone Star 26 Bar Jacks Valley Ranch Green Gulch Lee Campbell Ranch Dillard Hereford Ranches John Venhuizen Courtney Herefords Wishbone Herefords Ryel Herefords Harland Herefords Chuck Feddes Ranch Holmes Herefords Tesquite Ranch (TE Mitchell & Sons) Rees Bros Ochs Bros Orvis Cattle Company K&B Herefords Carlson Herefords-Raymond Nelson Herefords Oregon Hereford Ranch John Schmidt & Sons Rock Creek Herefords Von Forell Herefords Peckenpaugh Ranches Pied Piper Farms Shield Bar Herefords 07 Ranch (Tiberius Cattle) Tachenko Bros Murray J Brown & Sons Middleswarth Herefords Adams Bros & co. Charles Higgins Marvin Feddes & Sons Camco Herefords My wife’s dad told me recently, that in 1968 they went to New Mexico and bought 65 Mischief cows from Al Mitchell. Where I have raised cattle in South Louisiana and now in Alabama, you can support quit a bit more cattle per acre than out west. He thinks Mr. Mitchell in New Mexico ran about 1 cow per 50 acres of land. When they turned the cattle loose in the relatively small Alabama pastures, he said they ran straight through the fences and when they came at you, needless to say they didn’t bluff. In the attached picture caption you see it was printed that the cattle had a “strong and healthy constitution”.

To the best of my knowledge,Middleswarth,Marvin Feddes and Sons now Feddes Herefords , and John Schmidt are still operating. Venhuizen is now Churchill Cattle Co. Von Forrell now has Red Angus. Middleswarth Hdqs was originally first white people owned ranch in Wyoming. Put together by two Generals from Ft. Larmie. Walls in the main house were about 3 ft thick with a lookout on the third floor. The Red Cloud Encampment was on that property. Charlie Higgins dispersed in mid 80's The Adams who use to be at Gunnison CO. now own that ranch The same ranch was a famous Quarter Horse Ranch in the 50's. Home to Oklahoma Star and Nowata Star. 26 Bar dispersed in 85. I think Springerville Ranch now owned by Hopi Indian Tribe. The headquarters there was originally Milky Way Hereford Ranch mountain Headquarters. Wishbone dispersed in 2000 according to Orville's book. He now lives in Valentine NE. He came by to see us on his way to Texas a few years ago. I think he was in his mid to late 80's then. Still very sharp.Jerry Harland was tragically killed in a vehicle train accident in mid 2000's. Herd Dispersed soon thereafter I think. Claude lived until 2-3 years ago I think.May have had some cattle still. See Jerry's son Tim every once in a while. He is just south of us at Buffalo OK teaching Vo Ag.
