I was listening to the Hoffman Sale online today. I should have been paying more attention to the opening remarks. Because I think one of the things that was announced from the stand was that there was someone present who had been selected as Jack Ward's replacement...who takes the COO position in January. I didn't catch the name - but I think something was said about him no longer being available to judge shows, so I guess he is coming from that environment.
Hoffmans sold 35 Hereford Show heifers for an average that was right at $22K.
Looks like their overall average for everything, Herefords and Angus, was right at $15K

Congrats to shane.
On another note, I'm sure there have been and still are hereford breeders, both registered and commercial, interested and qualified, but for one reason or another unable to make it to the interview phase. . . Maybe one day this breed will actually be able to think outside the box instead of just pay it lipservice. . . Let's hope we are taking steps in that direction.

Really another angus breeder.
I can see the writing on the wall. Might as well get use to seeing BLACK HEREFORDS.
Not at my ranch but I think that's the path they want to take. Thoughts on that?

I don't think hiring people with Angus backgrounds particularity means we should be on the lookout for the association to be changed to black Herefords. Reminds me of when Lee Iacocca came out of retirement from Ford Motor Company to be CEO of a struggling Chrysler years ago.... He didn't try and make Chrysler another Ford, but if you remember they came up with the K car concept with a large emphasis on front wheel drive vehicles. If I remember correctly the government bailed them out financially but was repaid in full. Hopefully these new hires are selected on their merit of experience and achievements. I wonder how many Hereford folks applied for the position? I know I didn't..... Don't have the educational credentials.

I totally agree with you elkwc. I sincerely hope to the negative that these two AHA executives with their black critter credentials swiftly reform themselves to become Hereford advocates in all respects. If not, woe be to us Hereford people and the Hereford breed.

Hoffmans sold 35 Hereford Show heifers for an average that was right at $22K. Looks like their overall average for everything, Herefords and Angus, was right at $15K Good cattlemen do not spend $20,000 for a piece of paper and kids do not have that kind of chore money to spend on a heifer to take to a show. The only explanation for these prices is that the buyers associate their self worth with the money they spend on a fancy cow; it pains me to associate gluttony with Herefords. A solution, I think junior shows should be made into claiming competition. If a junior shows a heifer at the JNHE the junior should be forced to sell the heifer, if he gets a bid for over $15,000. That way if he is prudent with his project he will make a decent return and money will no longer have an outsized influence on the breed. Short of my pipe dream coming true, I think we should allow the gluttons to humiliate themselves.

And, certainly, a Hereford heritage adds to that value. Value to the Hereford breeders and ranchers and to the breed itself.

I guess I'm giong to sure enough stur shit up. as far as I am concerned Shane is a good hire. I have seen him judge 4 shows of which 2 I had a "dog in the hunt" so to speak. Futhermore I have also personally talked to him on numerious occasions and he has many the very same concerns of where the purebred sector is giong as I do. I have gotten to the point I really don't care if the new hires are died in the wool hereford or not as long as the understand that genetic advancement in the commerical beef business has nothing to do with a showstick and EPD's are in no way shape or form the end all to be all.
as far as the 4 shows I have personally seen him judge (all 4-H)..............
rolled everything that couldn't travel AKA bad feet and poor overall leg structure as his first cut
then moved on to roll any heifer that was stale [/u]his second cut[/u]
and then moved onto his placings of the class and when before talking the individual class placings went to great lengths to explain why heifers must be free moving, structurally sound, pregant and not overly fat
he furthermore proceeded to do a Mullinix with his supreme champion female placings which I think pretty much ought to be the standard for how supreme champion females in multi breed shows are evaluated by.
you guys are damn lucky you didn't get someone like Alan Sears, Ronny Green or any other of the perpetual gadflys the bounch from Assn to Assn and organization to organization.

Im not sure it came across clearly in my earlier post in this thread. I am a little encouraged that this was a good move. Of course, time will tell.
And i agree that a piece of paper doesnt make the education, but it also doesnt hurt either, as long as the individual doesnt swallow the institutional thinking, hook, line and sinker.

I stated about the earlier hire and I feel it applies here. Their background to me isn't as much issue as they both continue to be in the Angus business. Where I work I sign a paper every year to the effect that I can't work for on the side or own an interest in an entity that competes with my employer. I would feel the same should apply here. I feel if two applicants were equally qualified then the one with Hereford ties should be hired. But if a person with ties to another breed it hired they should be required to divest of any interest in that breed. Again just my opinion.

elkwc, You are absolutely correct on the non-compete issue. Has, I wonder, the AHA Board implemented non-compete requirements for the two recently engaged "black critter" AHA executives? It is and will be so troubling, if not.

I don't disagree, but it is apparent that the board of directors does. And that is my frustration with apparently not thinking outside the box. Now my frustration can easily be replaced with understanding, especially if it was in the cards for me to make the annual meeting and i had the opportunity to hear all the facts and considerations as well as justifications. It is not and that has been and will continue to be my choice for the foreseeable future (other choices equally or more important). I may not always like the truth/facts, but i can and do understand them.

Looks like a lot of people need to "pull their head out". An Angus friend gave me a bumper sticker: ANGUS RULE & herefords drool. Like it or not Angus & black hided cattle rule the beef business. America's cow herd is BLACK, almost every where you look you see Certified ANGUS beef products, from white table cloth establishments to gas station convenience stores. I don't know if it is a fact but I have been told that you can buy ANGUS jerky and ANGUS dog food....seems a heck of a lot of people enjoy ANGUS. I know that many of you are afraid of ANGUS contamination. It will not happen. It is our Board's responsibility to select the right person for the job. Until proven otherwise I will assume they made the right choice. I do not care if the family produces and shows ANGUS, bunnies, or racing pigeons. What would be the response if Mr. Wards son/daughter exhibited the Grand champion female @ the Junior nationals & and other shows? Would breeders say "that was one fantastic Hereford female" or "the judge is a halter judge and I saw him talking to Mr. Ward before the show"? It should be to our advantage to have staff that understand the "workings" of the ANGUS organization.
Let's give them the opportunity to bring some of the "BLACK ANGUS MAGIC" to the AHA!
"Extremism to protect liberty is no vice."

I understand what your saying, but.
ANGUS MAGIC ( REALLY) . We don't need smoke and mirrors or magic just a good marketing manager. A guy who can back up OUR WORD WITH OUR BEEF.
I REALLY DONT THINK angus is the have all cure all for the beef business. Neither is Hereford. Why cant we compete? Simple the stigmata is still there from the past. How do we change that? target the younger generation not the older. They are the consumers that we need to be IN our way of thinking and our breed. Did we hire the right two guys? I sure as hell hope so. I don't have a dog in this fight because I am to small to make a difference.
we can debate this all day and it makes no difference to anyone. Might as well move on and hope for the best.
SHOW CIRCUIT ISNT WHERE ITS AT EITHER. FLUFF AND PUFF AND BLOW US ALL AWAY.
Target another chain like pizza hut. Made with genuine Hereford beef? or try and get Arbys ( I think they have angus )
Are we even trying? Can we deliver the product if they do get the deal?
I know Bookcliff says hes ok. So lets get moving and saddle up because we are all just in for the ride anyway.
