Last Friday was the final auction at Shasta Livestock. I have an inkling that it was shut down to force business to the Western Video Market. As small to medium producers, we need to be concerned that we losing competitive places to market our cattle.

Every time a market closes we lose market discovery. Probably not a problem for those producers with enough cows to make a pot load of feeders of one sex and type, but most cattle people aren't in that category. In our area we probably will see the markets that sell less than 50k cattle a year fade away.

Beings the same family ran both, I'll assume the video market was less headache and more profitable.

Can't afford to, get a group of the customers there, form a company and buy it, form a coop, everyone can share in the profit, it will be like getting a premium on the cattle sold for the members.

Have you read the book Shasta Livestock is selling about Ellington Peek’s life story?

Not sure if I have said it here before but I truly believe we are moving just like hogs did in our area to a “buying station” type sale barn. You will show up on a certain day and they will tell you what they are paying. Take it or leave it with no competition. If you think your cattle are that good own them through the feedlot and sell them on the rail.

Still just a quoted price and when a steer or heifer is "finished" you really aren't even left with the option to "leave it".....

You are correct. I guess our only option left is to peddle freezer beef if we want to set our price. Been pretty good the last year if you could find spots. Unfortunately when the handouts stop I think that market will dry up pretty fast too.
