Tom Krauss in Hereford America

Tom Krauss is a great HEREFORD patriot, a promoter of the HEREFORD breed, and as one would expect; raises some good questions about the breed and the Association.

If you have not done so, read his words in the current issue of Hereford America [The one that gets read] and if you share his concerns put a call in to your state president and any board of director that you think might listen to you.

I looked up and read Tom Krauss's article.  His thoughts are what many Hereford breeders and owners are feeling.  And if you can read between the lines, what he wrote can also pertain to many other breed registries.

The CAB program is a marketing program, and even though their information says that the animal should be 51% black hided, so many times we hear from breeders of Registered Hereford and other colored breeds that they received a check from CAB because their animals qualified for CAB.

IF CAB products are supposed to be so special and should be processed in different batches that the meat that is not labeled CAB, then why is it when their are meat recalls and they give the lot numbers, etc. is CAB products listed in the list of products that are recalled.

A few months ago I was doing some research and some of the information that I found was interesting.  Dairy beef contributes almost 25% of the beef that is consumed.  It also said the the percentage of dairy beef that is choice and prime is a higher percentage than the beef breeds.  But, what was really interesting was that it said that Angus beef being able to grade choice or prime was greatly improved when the animals were fed longer, yielding heavier carcasses that had more fat.

Here is the most interesting thing I found in the research.  Comment was made that there are two other breeds that can have just as much if not more influence on choice and prime carcasses.  Those two breeds are HEREFORD and Fleckvieh.

Why, when CHB has been around as long as it has not done more promotion?  Why, when HEREFORD can have just as much if not more influence on carcass quality is that not promoted?

While there are several different beef breeds, and they each have importance to the industry, there are some breeds such as the HEREFORD that used to more important than they are now.
