At one point in time an old timer told me that the AHA was approached before the AAA was about starting an breed certified beef supply chain system. At the time out of a lack of vision, arrogance, or plain ignorance they passed on that idea. After all at the the time this was originally pitch we were still 80% or more of the breed identified American herd. Why would something like that be needed after all. Through the lens of history this proved to be a big mistake, as the same organization/person that pitched this idea to the AHA took the idea to the AAA and they having more vision took it an ran. As the story goes this was genius as it ended up at least for the Angus to be a bit of an end run around the meat packer juggernaut and eventually the ongoing frame race at the time. As the story continues to grow it plays right into the hands of a vertically integrated system when adjusting for industrial economies of scale the inevitable outcome appears obvious. However, is there another way to make an end run around Certified Angus??? I wonder? Link to Walmart and their own meat packing plant.
