The way I see it both the polled trait and black hide color are seen as desirable in some circles. Both are dominant traits, so why did we accept the polls but the blacks have to have their own association?

The polled did have its own association until it was mismanaged. If we’re not careful we might be asking to join the Black Herefords association. We might not be as accepting but the rest of the cattle industry loves black

I really don't know the whole story of the history of the polled ones, but from my understanding it wasn't presented as having outside blood but as a mutation. The "black Herefords" are openly billed as having Angus in them. Seems kind of ironic to me, have had lots of BWF over the years, never thought about using a bull though. We are in the minority of farmers. in that we are essentially a commercial outfit that uses mostly Hereford females, and bulls. This year, we are retaining a bull that is a BWF, as well as a couple red ones. The BWF is actually a 3/4 Angus 1/4 Hereford with a white face. Our goal isn't to try to reinvent the wheel, but to try to maintain a little more of the Hereford traits that we like, and at the same time to get some black hide calves that we can market other than at a special Hereford sale if need be. Really is a sad state of affairs when good quality Hereford or other red calves sell less than common black hided ones.

Give it time and we will have GMO Black Herefords without any Angus genes.. That is being worked on in the ARS...

Just my opinion but think they should have called them white faced angus instead of black Herefords.

Great idea erherf: Incorporate the American White Faced Angus Association as a Non-Profit ("AWFAA, Inc."). Obtain 501(c)(3) tax exempt status (might need an accountant). Collect some dues, and take out a full page ad in the Angus Journal. . . then sit back and witness a noise similar to a thousand freshly weaned calves.
