In 2017 our Board of Directors retained the services of a quality consultant and invested significant Board and staff time in developing a strategic plan for 2017-2022. Seven core strategies and 33 Key initiatives were identified with the strategic intent of the AHA to increase the Hereford Demand Index (HDI) 12% by 2022. The HDI metric was illustrated by a nifty graphic that included Hereford bull/feeder calf price ratio, Hereford semen sales (reported by NAAB), AHA annual Registrations, and CHB pounds sold. Does anyone recall the actual formula and weighting of the four components or the base HDI at the beginning of the strategic plan? A quick review of the 2018 annual report did not find any mention of our current HDI. If anyone has that information please pass it on. Thanks in advance.
As Churchill said: "However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results."

I am disappointed (but NOT surprised)that this post did not draw even one response.
Our elected board members and paid staff need to be held accountable. Where is the follow up on the Hereford Demand Index? Let's trash the current Hereford Demand Index (if it hasn't already been trashed) and create a new improved and SIMPLE HDI. One that measures the sale price of Hereford feeder calves VS black feeder calves. A Hereford Demand Index that measures feeder calf price would impact many more Hereford breeders.

Oh, and a Blessed Christmas to Hereford talk participants (and lurkers)!

I follow the AHA’s twitter feed. I just posted a tweet asking them for an update on the HDI from last year to this year. If anyone else is interested, find the tweet and comment.

They’re still trying to figure how to calculate in the number of show heifers sold.

They’re still trying to figure how to calculate in the number of show heifers sold. I would be much more interested in knowing how many people who buy heifers go on to join the association.

It's been some time since our Association developed the Hereford Demand Index (2017). I for one was not opposed to hiring a consultant and investing our dollars and Association Staff resources in this project. I believe in management by objectives and the HDI set a clear path through 7 core strategies and 33 key initiatives to increase our HDI by 12% in 2022. 2022 is just around the corner and I still have not seen anything other than the slick, full color roll out that was done in 2017. No detail of how the index is calculated. No yearly updates of the change in HDI. Nothing!
Who is accountable and WHERE DOES THE BUCK STOP?
If you are interested in HDI and how the Association invests our dollars please contact your director and state president and let us know what you find out.
