I read in the new HW that they were going to update EPDs 10 times a year instead of 2.

I'm sure what I am about to share will probably stir the pot a little because it involves 2 things a few folks here have been pretty vocal and opinionated about at times but I felt it was relevant to the topic of this thread and wanted to share. First off I just want to describe the setting and sort of hand out some "kudos" because there are a few members here that participate on this message board from time to time that were either there or had a hand in planning either the banquet or the sale and I just wanted to say this year was a really great event in all aspects and thank you for your time and efforts. Last week was the Iowa Beef Expo sale, the state association had a really great prime rib meal with all the fixings (if you left hungry you must have been in the wrong place because it was filling!) the night before the sale. The state association subsidized part of the meal cost for all those who attended. The evening included hall of fame inductions and ended with an auction that benefited the juniors that included things from various items and advertisement donations to trophy sponsorships for the junior show and the breeders in attendance did a great job supporting the juniors with their bids. Jack Ward was in attendance, he has helped out with our state sale for many years including helping with the evaluation of the the consigments to determine the sale order and sitting on the auction block and introducing each lot as they come into the sale ring and going through their pedigree and relevant information before the bidding starts and it was great to see him back again this year for the first time as the AHA EVP. I know some here have their reservations about him but if you've ever met him or seen him in action there is no doubt this man has this breed's best interests in mind and is not afraid to get out there and feel the pulse of the breeders by mingling with the breeders and making himself available in a public setting to interact with whoever wanted his ear.
That being said Jack was given the microphone during the program after the meal and kept his comments short but he did talk about the new EPD releases. He talked about how AHA is going to release updated EPDs 10 times this year and at some point this year they will be switching software which will be able to better incorporate the geonomic data that has been collected. I'm sure that will make for some interesting discussion here but it was one of those moments that I'm sure caught a few people's attention when he brought it up.
That was the main reason I commented in this thread because of the relevance to the new EPD releases but I still wanted to mention how the sale went. Prices were down from last year's record breaking numbers which was expected with the current market and trends but it was still a strong sale for the Herefords: www.iowabeefexpo.com/saleresults2016.html#herefordsale Only the Charlois had a higher sale average at $4144 helped out by a high selling bull at $41,000. The commercial breeders are definately taking notice of Hereford bulls around here. We were sitting right in front of a guy that probably bought 3 or 4 bulls and a bred heifer and was probably one of the most active bidders in the stands. He told us they run about 250 commercial black angus cows and have bought around a handful or so of Hereford females recently too and plan to breed most of their cows to Hereford bulls and sell off most of the calves as black baldy feeders.
Official sale results: 40 bulls averaged $4,502 (top seller $15,250) 33 females averaged $3,566 (top seller $8500) 70 live lots averaged $4,079 2 embryo lots averaged $5,300
Total sale averaged $4,112 Cattle sold into 9 states
Unofficial break down by age: 2 & 3 year-old bulls (13) average $5,369 Fall 2014 bulls (13) average $4,454 Yearling bulls (14) average $3,743 Cow-calf pairs (9) average $4,089 Bred heifers (5) average $3,200 2015-born heifers (19) average $3,437
