Is there a current breed standard for the Hereford breed or are the shows decided on the judges whim?

ROFLMAO..... OH HECK NO.... There seems to be zero standard..... Has there ever been such a thing? I don't believe in my lifetime... Someone always seems to have a reason to pimp something different.

Since I have been laughed out of the show ring. I will ask those with more experience than myself what is ideal phenotype for Hereford cattle?

Yes this is our breed standard that we try to follow. As far as I know the animal pictured is a bull called Westwood Postman, a famous UK champion from about 1980. He appears in the pedigree of one of our cows. Would be interested in comments about him - obviously he's a different type from what you are used to looking at.

I have looked and looked for a breed standard and the best I can come up with is the Hereford Type Conference of 1969. The only information on that, anywhere, is in a Hereford Journal from that year. I went to the Hereford Genetic Summit last year, thinking I would hear something like that, but they only talked about the market and performance traits. I firmly believe that form follows function, but I still find it slightly odd that we don't have a uniform common goal. How do we measure progress as a breed if we don't know where we're going? I also understand that people need to be able to breed to suit their own particular tastes and markets. I can see why we don't have a standard, but I think some sort of published goal would still be useful, especially for people who don't put much effort into their breeding plan.

I would be scared for anyone to set a breed standard. I sure as heck won't be dictated to what "type" cattle I should produce. Cattlemen are independent as heck! Environment dictates "type and kind". As for those who are multipliers and need some one to define a breed standard., I wish they would just get out of the business and allow serious breeders to provide the seed stock . Just my humble southern opinion!

The reason why I asked about the breed standard was because I have never had any formal training on judging phenotype. And I recognize that there are some things about structure that I need to learn. As far as Westwood Postman is concerned, I like him in spite of his lack of pigmentation.

Funny video, Randy. I think I've seen some of the cattle in Ft Worth waddle like those Herefords in that video......
