I am looking for some semen to use on some of my larger cows to reduce birth weight and mature size but still fit in with the line breeding I am doing so no polled or line one bulls. I would like pigment and longevity. The cows descend from our sons of LHHR 72U Ribstone 402D and Standard Lad 14Z from Ochs Brothers. I want something that will nudge the size down not drop it through the floor.

How did the 14Z sons work for you? When he came down from Saskatchewan he came to my place. Ochs had been trying to buy him from Beatch, but they were unable to freeze semen on him. When I was able to get him collected, Ken Beatch gave me a semen interest. I don't know what he cost Ochs, but Beatch turned down the $20,000 Ochs offered before semen was frozen. His rear quarter was 31 inches hooks to pins. By comparison, King Ten was 24 inches.

I always loved that pic of 14Z that Ochs had in their catalog. It'd be cool if one of you guys that used him had some pics of some offspring to post up!

These pictures are our herd bulls from a few years ago. Attachment Deleted Here is a picture of our 14Z son, HC Apex 6197, as a two year old after breeding cows. He was a big bull and added a great deal of size but his daughters are still functional unlike a lot of the bigger cattle. Attachment Deleted This is a picture of Vs Hi Ribstone 34P, the best grandson of LHHR 72U Ribstone 402D that we had. Unfortunately, we could not use him much as most of our cows at the time were his sisters. He did through moderate birth weights. I still have his dam and she has a grandson of 20J on the ground and I hope he is good enough to perpetuate the cow family. His sire did a great deal of good for our program.

Strojan, looking at your 14Z son we have very different ideas on what is functional.

Strojan, looking at your 14Z son we have very different ideas on what is functional. I define functional as the ability to function in my conditions; I make no attempt to judge function from a photo. His sons and daughters have worked for us so I am happy. That being said I am still looking for something to take some of the rough edges off.

Lots of chrome on him. My mom loves all that white I prefer 4 white socks , tail, and face. Not a real big white fan but I would use that bull on my polled cows.

Thank you for all the responses. I have been perusing web sites and catalogs and here is my wish list for 2014. I want to use two or three bulls: a moderate bull, a bigger bull and maybe an old bull. I like 0827 to fill the moderate bull role, and I think that 39T would work on any thing I have. I didn't get as many 40W calves, I would like so I would like to try another 157K son. I liked 66T (157K x 137Y)at Lily's; so maybe his 3/4 brother R 157k Northstar 54U would work. As far as something old 96 Standard 50Y or 2U at Ngr's could provide a dose of something different.

So how do you like the 40w calves?
I came pretty close to ai back to 50y (opey). His daughters were very feminine and he consistently threw above average eye pigment and socks. They were a titch lighter boned but not too much. Nice uddered and small teated just dropped a little further than a guy likes as old cows. No voltage in him either which is part of why I almost went back to him - as an outcrossing cause there is so much voltage in the herd here. Personally I liked the Andy grandson we used from bar pipe better. We used 50y on heifers successfully but the bar pipe Andy grandson just had borderline too much bw to use on heifers - sure nice females tho.
I quite like 66t also. His daughters are beautiful females.
So what do you like for a bigger bull. I like 24h.

I liked the 40W calves, they reminded me of the LHHR 74U Ribstone 402D bull that headlined the Ochs Brothers herd. I did't have any calving problems but the calves grew up big. With both 20J's and the 40W's, I liked the bulls a bit more than the heifers. I was thinking of using a 157K son as the bigger bull but I am not familiar with 24H. I won't be A.I.ing again until November so I am not in a hurry.
