His ambition outweighed his ability, nothing new, happens all the time in all types of businesses.

His ambition outweighed his ability, nothing new, happens all the time in all types of businesses. He was named as 1 of 3 finalists for Farm Journal's National Producer of the Year Award, his picture was on the front cover of their November issue and less than 2 months later he's in bankruptcy court. The media ought to be smart enough to see a house of cards before they blow someone up for an award like that. They did the same thing back in the 80's when they called them the "young tigers" and did profiles on them and then they fell one by one when tough times hit. Its a problem with ag media and they aren't doing us any favors.

Reading through the discussions on another board about this case I came accross this quote from Abraham Lincoln:
"The ambition for broad acres leads to poor farming, even with men of energy. I scarcely ever knew a mammoth farm to sustain itself; much less to return a profit upon the outlay. I have more than once known a man to spend a respectable fortune upon one; fail and leave it; and then some man of more modest aims, get a small fraction of the ground, and make a good living upon it. Mammoth farms are like tools or weapons, which are too heavy to be handled. Ere long they are thrown aside, at a great loss." Abraham Lincoln Address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society Milwaukee, Wisconsin September 30, 1859

I doubt any of the trade magazines have a very active investigative department, it's easier and cheaper to take everything at face value, again it happens all the time in other professions, don't think it really hurts that profession, things keep a rolling along, the next big shot will be along soon enough to draw everyone's attention, will he be biting more that he can chew, we'll find out shortly.
