Weekly Cattle Auction
Wednesday October 22, 2014 Expecting 5200 2500 Stockers @ 8:00 700 Feeder Heifers @ 1:00 2000 Feeder Steers @2:00
The numbers won't be on our side much longer if we keep selling 3 to 1 steers to heifers. Looks like some serious retention going on

Why are you guys selling all your heifers, aren't they the future of your herd? I understand the money's great but aren't your old cows bring good money to? We are envious of the prices your getting but I still don't think I would change my overall strategy if I was getting what you guys are getting. Just my opinion, won't worry me if you tell me to mind my own business !

I have a few commercial heifers that come off recip's I can either sell or keep in the commercial herd but for my purposes I am better off buying an older bred commercial cow if the heifer will pay for most of her. It's a funny time my Grandfather would be rolling in his grave at the decisions we make today my cull cows I am going to over winter hay is cheap and they should be worth more in a few months after the fall cow crush

This week is the first round of "Special Calf Sales" at the sale barn in this area. Heard a couple of interesting things from The Pratt Livestock sale. A rancher from our County got paid $8 for the last 100 lbs on his heaviest calves. That is $8 total for the 100 lbs. Their 594 lb calves brought $8 total per head less than their 700 lb calves. They reported the "hot" market was on the 600 lb. calves.
Also said solid colored cattle both blacks and reds were selling the best. I was hoping that was not happening so much.

A client just left my office who sold some land and was doing some tax planning. Afterwards we were talking about the cattle market. He usually runs 200+ stockers a year on winter wheat thru March 1st. He said "NO WAY" this year. Just exactly what you said. Said you buy em do all the work and take all the risk for what? $50 a head?

normally I retain ownership on my calves.
HOWEVER........
sold the hereford steers last week dollared out at $1633 hd. held onto all the heifers for now except but a couple of dinks
Selling the Black & Baldie steers of ours and my father-in-laws tommorrow. same thing on heifers as the herfs.
time to take advantage of things and pay down more debt ahead of schedule besides,
the board is giong to hell, the dollar is gaining strength, the packers are losing money, the feeders are starting too and the retail sector is topped out according to the couple grocer's I've talked too.

Makes me glad we don't have to pay retail prices on beef. If you've been to the meat counter at the grocery store lately it's crazy how high meat prices are right now. Just picked up our 1/4 of beef from the locker last week from one of the steers the in-laws sent and figured with the price of the steer at time of slaughter and processing costs it came out to about $3.29/lb. You can't even get good hamburger at the grocery store for that right now so that's a pretty good price considering all the roasts and steaks you get in a 1/4 of beef. Saw ribeye steak as high as $11.99/lb once this summer.
