As a young couple trying to get into the seedstock and even just commercial cows I'm figuring out pretty quick that buying good Hereford cows is super tuff. So I'm just wondering if anybody in your area is having a complete dispersion sale if you could post it here. Thanks

It is hard in this area to find good commercial Hereford females. I looked for 6-8 months and finally went another route. Still plan on getting some when the opportunity comes up. I saw some bred 2 y/o commercial Hereford heifers bring 3,000. Hard to pencil it ouit with the current market. I've seen some larger bunches priced somewhat reasonable away from here. Mainly in NE and north and west. Saw one bunch in KS but they were a ways away and I had already bought all I wanted until I see what trend the market might take. I have found production sales the best place for me to find small quantities of females of decent quality. Hope you find what you are looking for. Haven't heard of any dispersals in this area. I would watch the AHA auction site many times they will show up there.

I've found in my limited time raising polled herefords that alot of the big small guys. If that makes sense they do a very good job of offering high quality animals backed with fertility and health guarantees for a few hundred bucks per head over feeder auction prices. At least in my area it is. The bigger the sale the bigger the crazy sometimes. Don't be afraid to walk into one with your checkbook. Most of the senior members and breeders on here would probably agree that most buyers aren't buyers and money talks bs .... you know the rest. I've seen quite a few people attend sales or private treaty that talk the talk but wouldn't buy a top notch bull at 3k but will go bitch about how they could get better and never do.
You don't want sonething that requires a calf puller with 4 purple ribbons attached to it anyway.

Two times we bought cows at dispersal sales, both times we had problems with the cows. Dispersal sales happen for a reason. And most of the time, that reason means that there is a problem with the cows.

I get a kick out of the fact that there is a dispersal and then a production sale again the following year. Seems to happen a lot more on the Angus side.

Here's one coming this fall! If prices continue to drop, there will be more jumping ship!

If that is a genuine sale it wouldn't be a bad place to pick a few cows up.

If that is a genuine sale it wouldn't be a bad place to pick a few cows up. But likely you will get quite a bit of Siimmental blood in them.WLB Livestock Purebred Simmental and Polled Herefords, according to their web page. Here is is a daughter of WLB Global 72M 50S.

Global progeny segregates quite a bit from my limited experience.

Global progeny segregates quite a bit from my limited experience. Would that not be an expectation if you knew the bull was crossbred?

Yes, but I learned he was crossbred when I saw progeny.

You are right in that I haven't extensively schooled myself in what the current DNA technology can ---or CANNOT do! I was up in the DFW metroplex this last weekend and my route took me very close to the Airport. As one of those huge jets was landing over my head, I thought about my great granddaddy, who came to Texas in 1881 and traveled a road that was not far from where that airport now sits, and what he would have thought about how things had changed in the last 135 years. Hell, I can REMEMBER some of my relatives who still didn't have indoor plumbing when I was a kid - and one actually didn't have electricity in their home until after I was born. So I am ALSO aware of the fact that this DNA technology is rapidly evolving. What can actually be done today may(and probably will) be a mere fraction of what can and will be done in the future!

DNA testing and genetic engineering are two different (but related) things. I'm sure you are right about the future, in some ways it is sad. I already see technology that I do not like and we are just in stage one.
I'm no DNA expert myself.

Yes, but I learned he was crossbred when I saw progeny. I didn't mean it accusatory. Sucks to learn something "after the fact".
