We have had good luck with the one that is just a circular hoop. I cannot think of the brand name right now. Part of the secret to doing a good job with it is to shell the horn after the initial burn and then burn it again.

What kind of paste are you referring to. Is that the acid based paste?

I've tried paste a couple years ago. I had a problem with cows licking the paste off of the calves heads. I prefer using electric dehorner that way I know I've gotten the job done when the calves leave the chute!

I was wondering if the cows would lick off the paste. Thank you. haven't ever had a problem with that since I went to pasting the tens of hundreds of calves I have pasted at birth . futhermore, while I am not giong to say that it doesn't happen, if you've ever took a dip of Copenhagen with even the wiped off remnants of Naylors on the fingers, I can't imagine a cow taking even more than one lick on a pasted horn bud, much less continuing to lick until it's all gone. I would guess that if it didn't work, most blame the dam of the calf, but more than likely it wasn't put on the horn bud properly or in enough quanity.

I agree that it tastes bad, but I have seen them lick it off (after all, cows almost always lick the iodine when you dip a calfs navel...and we all know that can't be good either). And the calves will often rub it off with their feet. We put a piece of tape on top of the paste. There are always still some we have to burn at branding time.
