What type of insurance if any do most people use for their Herd Bulls. Mortality natural causes or Performance loss of ability to perform. What companies offer these policies?

Semen stored offsite is the best insurance money can buy.

I insured my neighbors chiangus bull that he loaned me to cover the cows after ai just in case some didn't take and I never noticed them. Cost me $18 for $8000 insurance for 6 months through Indiana Farmers Mutual. My biggest fear was hunting season or poachers shooting through woods into pasture along the creek.

Semen stored offsite is the best insurance money can buy. We live in completely different worlds. If one of our bulls gets out and damages something we pay in cash or repair the damage. Next time I will offer some semen and see how that goes. Farm Bureau offers insurance, it may vary in your area.

Klee I was joking in the other post. This is serious. If your bull cannot perform naturally or dies young because of performance injuries do you want to keep that semen? If he dies from a lightning strike that is understandable, but why would you want to keep genetics that cannot make it in your herd?

I agree that semen is "cheap insurance" on a bull. Having lost one bull from gunshot that wasn't collected many years ago, then losing Diesel (at an older age) from lightning strike - and having had the foresight to have collected him - I can see the benefit of having a bit of an insurance policy in the semen tank on herd bulls.
