Getting a no-till drill, to plant small grains, sudan and pasture, has been on my wish list for several years and now I am in a position where I can buy a ten or twelve foot model. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with no tilling.

Congrats...you will love it...I've been paying a guy to drill Ryegrass for me in the fall and it has been a lifesaver...hope to be in your position someday.

how big is your tractor? I have used a great plains 10ft model and I know have a 4615 crustbuster. The crustbuster gets through the soil better, but I don't have a grass seed attachment. I bet a used 750 10ft model may be out there some where. If so that would be a really good option as well, but will take more horsepower.

Not trying to talk anyone out of a new piece of equipment but do you have a local FSA office. I rent a $15000 sunflower drill for $75 BUCKS no acreage limit. I only use it once or twice a year so your situation may be different but I've found I can get alot done in a 2 days with a 12' dril. We have one here also.....I've used it several times.

Don't know about little ones, we run a landoll 30' and a landoll 40', with 175-200 horses pulling them. As far as I am concerned, airbag controlled depth is the way to go and their seeding adjustments are hands above more accurate and simplier to adjust than any of the others.

Now a 30 foot drill would make quick work for me, but those don't do well in thin air! sure would like to try one sometime up here. Been dragging a jd 750 around some this spring, borrowed unit, been used with the spurs on a little too much, but still gets the job done. Tom, how do the landoll' like rocks?! Wish the fsa office in these parts had a clue about things like that, now that makes sense.

Tom, how do the landoll' like rocks?! . no more trouble with them than our conventional JD 8300 disk drills have that the landolls hve pretty much replaced since we've gone from minimum till to pretty much no till.

When not dragging the 750, we use an 8200. Works great for sudan/sorghum. For alfalfa and/or clover, we still can't beat on old brillion sure stand, altho I'd like to trade it for a bigger one!!

I plan on pulling the drill with our International TD9 or Cat D4 both of which pull a twelve foot disc and ring roller. I have been leaning towards either a great plains 1006nt or 1206nt. I am wondering if I should get the fertilizer box so I can apply starter fertilizer?

Drilled 70 acres of brome last year with an 8 foot drill and a john deere 730 diesel... Lots of time to contemplate!
