A really good book about the development and anatomy of the udder is a book called "The Mammary Gland" by Charles Turner published in 1952. Turner was a professor of dairy science at the University of Missouri. The book goes into gross as well as the micro anatomy of what we as breeders are doing. On page 17 it describes fused teats which is a genetic defect in Horned Hereford cattle. In about 1980 Horst Leipold coined the name synthelia for this abnormality. The book does a nice job of explaining the primordial teat buds and how their placement determines the position of the teats and why synthelia will result when the primodial teat buds are spaced too closely together.
