WHAT? WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!!!!!
When leaders like Briener, Copeland, Milligan, Breeding, Barber & Krauss [REAL Hereford Breeders in my mind.] and the AHA show committee recommend "...getting backfat & frame scores on the cattle at Denver" but "...on the recommendations of some staff, voted it down as unfeasible"; something is way wrong.
The title of Executive Vice President in a misnomer. The EVP is a secretary. The job is not to "run" the association. The job is to implement the recommendations of the Board; not to make excuses that things are "unfeasible". Losers say things are "unfeasible".....winners figure out how to get them done! As a breed we need to get this done to put a little creditability back in the showring.
If this were a REAL business the secretary would execute the recommendations OR be given a box and an hour to leave the building.
QUIET PLEASE............................................................I think I hear the ticking.

"QUIET PLEASE" was intended to see if you hear the "ticking" too; not to end the thread.
Maybe I'm way off base..............again?

I do realize that an association needs to have a profit, but that said, the main goal should be to be the vessel that promotes and enhances the marketability of all that the association represents. It is not an easy task, but I think if the scale was balanced correctly we would find that the revenue coming into AHA from performance records of the breeders raising range bulls would be significant when compared to revenue from advertising. So, at least as much emphasis should be placed on the breeders that are doing the work and due diligence to keep the breed competitive in the production phase as well as in the fluff and puff phase.
Sometimes (seems like more often), the politics and hype seem to get in the way of knowing and understanding what it really takes to raise good, sound, functional cattle today. The tried and true range bull, functional females, and the breeders that raise them are what brought the Hereford breed back to where we are today. It is through their hard work and relentless pursuit of the type of cattle that work in and for the beef industry that we are enjoying the resurgence of the Hereford breed. It is the breeders non compromising attitude toward the quality and sustainability of this breed that turned the tide in our favor, and this cannot be taken for granted. No association or institution can do that, only hard work and generations (cattle and people) of dedication. An association is only a vessel to take these long term, proven ideas and help them become marketable as a group to the industry. The association needs this diversity of breeders heading in the same direction much more than any of the breeders need an association, and special interests or fads must be analyzed to see what the long range ramifications will be. We are very fortunate to have this coincide with these cattle prices we are experiencing, as it gives us the collateral to promote and enhance the good things about our product and the benefits we bring to the beef industry. I just need to say again that through all the things that seem to have nothing to do with the nuts and bolts of the beef industry that we see going on, it is indeed an honor and a pleasure to represent the great Hereford breeders of the KHA.

Well said Tom certainly agree with your logic there. We had better hope there is always a large enough ,grounded pool of breeders as the backbone to carry things forward in the right direction. We need the commercially oriented, common sense cattle breeders to drive and maintain that direction. Too much fluff, puff and huff, and your house comes down.

Excellent post Tom! Very well stated that as Association members we are correct in expecting some service to us and to The Breed.
We appreciate all you do to make The Kansas Hereford Association a viable and active State Association.

Unfortunately, it appears there are fewer and fewer in this category - a result of expiring, retiring or just plain tiring. The fluff and puff seems to draw of the attention these days.

is the American Hereford Association a business, is it's purpose to turn a profit. rockmill - If I remember correctly [sometimes do...] the AHA is a 501 c [non-profit]. Non-profits do not turn a "profit"; they report either a positive or [negative] change in net assets. Accountants......please help me out here. My post was not about the change in net assets. It was to address the role of the board and the role of the "secretary" whose job is to implement the directives of the board. Losers make excuses that things cannot be implemented. Winners make things happen. If you are interested in the AHA's huge deterioration of net assets over time, perhaps no one can better explain of this than Byron.
