Unofficially heard that Hoffman's averaged $15,000+ on 127 lots yesterday.
Good, bad, or indifferent???
(not talking specifically about Hoffman's just sky high prices in general)

$15,000 at Hoffmans today less $2000 at the sale barn tomorrow equals a roughly $13,000 depreciation. Fun money leads to bad cattle.

We got where we are selling in the range bull business today by culling and knowing how to use a knife. God, I hope we don't forget how to do that and have to learn all those lessons over again ! Seems every breed does in about a 25 year cycle though. Maybe the next national breed annual meetings should include a course on knife selection and now to use one.

I've been is a few herds this year where it was evident either the breeder didn't know how to use a knife or he had no idea what quality was and what a good animal should look like. Anytime a breeder starts saving a very high percentage of his bull calves it raises a flag to me. I've heard of up to 90% being retained as bulls. A very well known herd was from this area and I've heard some say what they retained and it wasn't near that high. I call it greed. And it is evident several breeders are sacrificing the opportunity to improve the quality of the bulls they offer the commercial breeder for the almighty dollar.

Bad for me today as well. I full well intended to buy a couple of cows at the Baker sale but the prices just seemed so ridiculous that I'd never make it pay off financially.
I am super happy for all the breeders getting good money. I just hope they are careful with it and don't expect this to last forever. Look what is happening to corn farmers today. They thought high corn prices were here to stay!
I'll just grow internally.

May be like the story I heard today of a Hereford bull selling for $200K. Transit insurance was for $15K. Which price was real?

Another thing that REALLY bothers me about all this (drawing off experience in other areas) is that bull markets CLIMB a wall of WORRY!
There is no worrying that I see. Everybody loves the party and thinks the good times are here to stay!

We are in a realm where there is no reality for too many people who call themselves breeders. The contrivances that we see in these "auctions" are so ingrained with so many purebred people that I don't wish to be associated with the side shows they create. Another conversation from today was about the "Sale of Champions" at the MO State Fair. An investment of $1,500 led to the supposed purchase of the champion hog for $16,000. Why have the sideshow of an "auction"? What does that teach the kids involved? As far as I am concerned it just leads to another generation of crooks with even less integrity than the last. And when you see a fabrication like Hoffman's sale you know those crooks have reach their pinnacle. We should all be more forward in calling a spade a spade instead of letting these people be the face of our breed.

Watching Bakers. Who can make these numbers work? Really people??? Well don't keep us in the dark. Can you provide some details on some of the lot numbers?

Wouldn't be appropriate to post lot numbers. Just too high for me. You sell $5000-$7500 yearlings it probably was fine to pay what they brought.

With Hoffmans you are getting seconds as it can be assumed they save the best for their own replacement needs. In other words, the cow you bought this year is not good enough for them to keep as a replacement. On the other hand, Bakers had been in the business for 69 years breeding cattle and the ranch had sold. So, the entire herd including the best was selling. A couple of years down the road, the cow bought at Hoffmans will be superseded by the next big thing but the cow bought at Bakers for the same money will be one of old Bakers best. What would you rather own?

This word "dispersal" is a wonderful marketing tool, another one is "reduction sale" we have them out here also.
