I had a very similar train of thought reading the results of the sales.
With those kinds of numbers it appears that Hereford will not be involved in the commercial sector much longer.
Reminds me a lot of the recent Brahman hype. Probably will end the same way with quality scraping bottom and commercial guys swearing off the breed for another generation

Exactly, not sure how we are disagreeing?
If everything is $5k heifers and $20k cows then there is no incentive to produce quality, cull, etc.
A Murray Grey breeder 30 minutes away sold a JDH Brahman cow for $5500. She was 7, only had two calves, and they were not consecutive years. That is where the breed is at now. And from what I read on this website, that is a similar situation with the big money Herefords, too.

I believe that Herefords have become popular again because black cattle no longer do well at traits not measured. Unfortunately, the new wave heterozygous polled movement within the breed is not focusing on those traits that are not easily measured as well. When cattlemen find out that the nice looking polled bull they bought won't hold together and won't take off horns, then they will be turned off of the Hereford breed again. I will not go polled because I want to remain distinct from the nouveau riche propagators.

We were rich when most of this country was nothing. Not sure how that makes me a better cattleman. My heterozygous polled Hereford bull bred my Brahman and Brangus cattle at 11 months of age. 11 months of age. I have no idea how he did it. He must have pushed them in the pond then jumped on em. I was expecting Thanksgiving calves and the girls are sacking up now. So he is holding up on pasture in the Atchafalaya swamp with no feed and breeding anything that comes close before he turned one year old. Dang I got ripped off! If the calves have horns I just don't know what I am gonna do.

chris sakes, just pick up the stick and beat the h-e-double hockey sticks out of the bush and when the birds fly knock em out of the air with the double barrel. all this hidden meaning fancy wording just don't cut the mustard, as much as it does the cheese

Picketwire I am going to be smelling coffee all morning. Thank you for the chuckle. Life isn't fair. There, I said it. Whatever you do in life the entry level bottom skill operations will always overwhelm the little guy. If you want to be the best there is plenty of elbow room. Took this a few weeks ago when he turned 18 months. 55 inches at the hip. He isn't perfect but he did his job and then some.

I am saying, in my area new money is flaunting its wealth by getting into the Hereford business/tax shelter. The nouveau riche is concerned with consuming money lest it go to Uncle Sam and so in most cases the cattle they produce will not hold together in the long term.
