I quote from another thread. "Could you show an example of a good eye compared to a bad eye?"I ask myself the same question and post a couple of pictures which I think are good examples. Good eyes? Bad eyes?

Good examples of what I was talking about frmaiz. The bottom calf has 100% pigment but the setting is totally bad.

Well done frmaiz. A very good example of good and bad eye settings. Hate those bug eyes that look like you could knock them off with a stick! Pigment don't matter a bit when they stick out from the skull like that. Also notice the hair whorl is low on both pictures, very nice.

Thanks for the pics. I had never thought too much about eye set attributing to cancer eye.

I don't have an idea on how is the inheritance of eye set, although I expect it to be a quantitative trait that is determined by a great number of genes each with a small effect. The X369 bull will have about 80 calves born in September and I will check them against the cows. By the way, the bull with protruding eyes is a son of WLB Global that is in a AI Stud. I have seen a picture of his mother but couldn't appreciate her eye set.

Why do you like the low whorl?

Why do you like the low whorl? High whorl tends to be be flighty and panicky while low associates with more docility. Good examples pictured of good vs. bad eye set.

Ah yes, I had it backwards in my mind. Someone posted a picture of a high-whorl, docile steer on Twitter, and it reversed the trend in my mind. Got it straight now.

The picture of Global I've seen he looks to have real good eye set. Guess this bull could have got it from his dam. Or maybe Global doesn't pass it on. I have to say I've been rather disappointed with what I've seen out of Global.

I haven't seen anything out of Global locally that I liked. Terrible haircoats, very light bone.

I have to say I've been rather disappointed with what I've seen out of Global. I just bought a set of 20 registered heifers, among them two Global daughters. Just a tax opportunity. One of them looks to me as an off-type and I wonder if it has Simmenthal in the background. I have a picture of their eyes; I think that in the case of Global progeny, bad eye sets come from the cow, since little attention is given here to this characteristic.

The bottom one without the pigment actually has the better eyes, by a long shot
